Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA)
Aug. 24, 2017
Tanveer represented Toronto East at the 2017 RYLA program. He is a student at University of Toronto, studying public policy and city studies. The RYLA program, “Leadership Begins With Me”, provides an opportunity for participants to get to know themselves better and to cultivate respect and trust of others. Participants are able to identify their own leadership skills and determine ways to make more effective use of their resources. Their enthusiasm and technique is brought back to the community from which the participants were sponsored, and thus impacts on the young people being influenced by these youthful leaders. |

Dr. Khaled Almilaji is a trained medical doctor who has been providing emergency medical services treating Syrian refugees and wounded rebel soldiers in the most difficult circumstances in Syria and Turkey since 2012. In 2013, the first case of Polio was detected in Syria, and Dr Almilaji was able to assemble 8500 volunteers to vaccinate 1.2 million children under the age of five in eigth days. The success of the first campaign led to working with the Gates Foundation to help fund a continued effort of polio vaccinations. This past June, in recognition of his work with this organization he was granted the Canadian Meritorious Medal for humanitarian work, presented by the Canadian Governor General, David Johnston.
