Fundraising and seed collection in Canada To Support Zambia Agriculture

Joanne Hutchinson is active volunteer in her east Toronto neighbourhood and in Zambia. Joanne has a long term commitment to sustainability and when on a visit to Africa in 2011 she saw the poverty and need in very poor western Zambia and started, Socio-Economic and Environmental Development Solutions (SEEDS). SEEDS is a registered Canadian charity which provides non GMO fruit and vegetable seeds to Zambia which supports a local tree and fruit tree nursery for agricultural training and rehabilitation. The fundraising and seed collecting program here in Canada provides an interesting model for sustaining a self help project in Africa. Syrian Humanitarian Work

Dr. Khaled Almilaji is a trained medical doctor who has been providing emergency medical services treating Syrian refugees and wounded rebel soldiers in the most difficult circumstances in Syria and Turkey since 2012. In 2013, the first case of Polio was detected in Syria, and Dr Almilaji was able to assemble 8500 volunteers to vaccinate 1.2 million children under the age of five in eigth days. The success of the first campaign led to working with the Gates Foundation to help fund a continued effort of polio vaccinations. In 2014, Dr. Almilaji along with a couple of Canadian doctors, formed the Canadian International Medical Relief Organization. This past June, in recognition of his work with this organization he was granted the Canadian Meritorious Medal for humanitarian work, presented by the Canadian Governor General, David Johnston. Dr. Almilaji is currently living in Toronto with his wife and new-born baby daughter studying at the University of Toronto for his masters in public health. He and his wife’s long term plan is to “learn everything we can before returning to rebuild the healthcare system in Syria”.

Owner of “Fermentations!” Talks About His Business

Guest speaker will be Charles Fajgenbaum, owner of “Fermentations!” 201 Danforth. This has been a locally run business for 25 years. By its own description “Fermentations is Toronto’s number one place to make your own wine, beer, cider, and even mead!” Fermentations has won multiple medals for their wines and beers in both Canadian and American competitions. They are also providing samples of their wares for our Host Hospitality event for the Rotary International Convention in June. |

Rotary Eco-system Education Project

Steve Smith has supervised hundreds of forestry projects throughout Ontario since 1982, and founded Urban Forest Associates in 1993. He is a Consulting Forester, and an ISA Certified Arborist and Qualified Tree Risk Assessor. He is qualified in Ecological Land Classification in Ontario and is a Certified Seed Collector. Stephen is a director of the Society for Ecological Restoration (Ontario Chapter), a member of theOntario Urban Forest Council and the Ontario Invasive Plant Council, and a former director of the Forest Gene Conservation Association of Ontario. He was a volunteer on the Habitat Restoration Committee of the City of Toronto Task Force to Bring Back the Don1991-2008. He is currently working on a committee with the City of Toronto Planning Department to create a guide to the trees and shrubs of Toronto and is updating the Invasive Plant List for Ontario for the Invasive Species Centre. Steve Smith is our project manager for our Rotary Eco-system Education Project better known as our Don Valley Tree planting which takes place every April/May. |

Ailey Pacione will be our speaker. She is the manager of a cannabis clinic on the Danforth (between Jackman and Playter). She will speak to the club about cannabis, its components and effects. The clinic provides counselling and prescriptions for medical users and her perspective will be from the medical side. |

On Monday, May 14th at the Eastview Community Centre there will be an Intergenerational Garden planting from 11am -1pm. The Centre is at 86 Blake Street. TERC is supporting the creation of this intergenerational garden and there is an opportunity for Rotarians to participate in the planting which is taking place on the 14th. Wellspring provides free programming for people with cancer and their loved ones, and Victoria will provide us with more information about the services available for people in our community who might be impacted by the disease. |
